Provider Relief Fund

As a part of the federal government’s COVID-19 response, the CARES Act set aside more than $100 billion in financial relief for hospitals and healthcare providers. This Provider Relief Fund aims to address not only the economic harm or lost revenue across the entire healthcare system due to the stoppage of elective procedures, but also the economic impact on providers incurring additional expenses caring for COVID-19 patients.

On June 9, 2020, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced the availability of $15 billion dollars for eligible Medicaid/CHIP programs or Medicaid managed care plans that have not received a payment from the Fund’s general distribution.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has granted a second extension of the application period for Medicaid and CHIP providers to apply for payments from the Provider Relief Fund.  The new deadline to apply is Friday, August 28, 2020.

Additionally, providers who received automatic payments from the Phase I, Medicare General Distribution (which was based upon Medicare utilization) but failed to apply to receive additional funds at that time will be given another opportunity to apply. This reopened application period is available beginning August 10, 2020 through August 28, 2020. This will allow Medicare providers who received nominal payments from the Phase I, Medicare General Distribution to apply and receive the intended total payment of two percent of net patient revenue.

As a reminder, funding is available for eligible Medicaid/CHIP providers who have not received a payment from the Phase I Medicare General Distribution.  The payment to each provider will be approximately 2% of reported gross revenues for patient care.
