Meaningful Use

Meaningful Use (MU) is defined as using certified electronic health record (EHR) technology to:
  • Improve quality, safety, efficiency, and reduce health disparities
  • Engage patients and family
  • Improve care coordination, and population and public health
  • Maintain privacy and security of patient health information

The desired outcome for MU compliance is:

  • Better clinical outcomes
  • Improved population health outcomes

  • More robust research data on health systems
Meaningful Use Regulations
The Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs provide financial incentives for the “meaningful use” of certified EHR technology. To receive an EHR incentive payment, providers must show that they are “meaningfully using” their certified EHR technology by meeting certain measurement thresholds that range from recording patient information as structured data to exchanging summary care records. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has established these thresholds for Eligible Professionals (EPs), Eligible Hospitals (EHs) and critical access hospitals (CAHs).
